And as an added bonus? We're still married! Although, it is less of a testament to the state and strength of our marriage and more of a testament to good directions and easy to read pictures, designed especially for the furniture-building inept. (Read: us.)
But still. It was much more impressive to make a statement like that after we bought an entire master bedroom full of cheap (and probably breakable) furniture from IKEA, and Mark put it all together by himself while I stood there staring at the directions, repeating over and over, "this doesn't make any sense!"
Love is grand. That's what I always say.
We have no mattress yet. I don't know anything about crib mattresses, and since the prices go from about $60 to over $200, I'm sure I'll be pushed by guilt to buy an overly-expensive mattress. (And, if you know about these things and want to tell me all the reasons why we only need to spend $100, please do so. Or direct me to a place where they will.)
Things are going pretty well! Crib is together, still married, school is almost over, cupcake has mastered the art of FLASHDANCE, and the third trimester is right around the corner.
The only negative to mention is that I think my old gynecologist is having weekend coffee at my study spot. I'm pretty sure it's him, but can't get a good enough look without staring, and I can't stare because he's one of those friendly people who says hi if he catches you looking (I know! The nerve!). I know that gynecologists need coffee, too, but I'd rather not be sipping my latte next to a guy who has seen my vagina.

Go for the $100 mattress. As long as it's a firm mattress there's no need for expensive craziness! We have had two and they both made it through with the $100 firm mattress and it's still kicking around for #3 to use.
I think that unless you want an organic mattress, there's no reason to spend a ton. As long as its firm and fits in the crib well... so what? Personally, I like the idea of an organic crib mattress, because I have lots of health things that organic seems to help. But if that's not your thing... then just get a good, firm mattress that fits well. You don't have to pay for all the bells and whistles.
Ah the crib mattress - here's the thing- they all have to meet the same safety standards & guidelines whether they cost $50 or $250 so this is one thing that you really don't need to spend a ton on :)
I've always erred on the side of cheaper when it comes to mattresses for cribs. I mean, I wouldn't buy one at a garage sale (probably) but I know that no mattress is going to really protect us from SIDS.
We got a $75 mattress. My husband keeps thumping it and declaring that it isn't soft enough. I keep telling him it isn't supposed to be soft!
I put our crib together while Matt was at the movies one day. :)
Ah, nothing like putting together furniture to test the marital limits. Sean & I never fight like we do when we are assembling something. I curse the IKEA directions "artist"! Sounds like you are making serious progress though!

Glad your marriage survived the setting up of the crib--now both of you can move on to building a house from the ground up :o).
Was hoping you'd post a picture of the crib-- but just thinking now that perhaps you're waiting for the whole ensemble to be done.

Putting furniture together doesn't test my marriage as much as moving does. My husband is a foot taller then me, so asking me to help him move a desk that's taller then me, is a recipe for lots of yelling, curse words, and a couple of "just set it down, I'll do it". I'd likely divorce him if it wasn't for his ability to put music on my ipod. Glad ya'll got everything in order. I'm with the other gals on the mattress, no need to spends hundreds of dollars. You are so funny, I love all your posts! I complained about being fat my whole pregnancy and now that I'm done having a baby I complain about it too, it's just a fact of life, and your right as a "fertile". I have a $70 mattress from Walmart and it is just great for my darling little baby so don't worry too much! Just don't fill up the bed with squishy pillows and blankets, that's the stuff to watch out for :) Good luck! You are doing great and are more than half way through!
Does the crib convert to toddler bed later on? If it does, a toddler can be a challenge to its durability, and I would go with a mid-range one. If it is just a crib, baby won't be using it for nearly as long, so cheap is good. IMO, a good quality waterproof mattress cover/pad/protector thingie is more important, especially if you want the mattress to last.
On Mattresses... and why less is best
1. They spend all of maybe a year or two on them before you end buying a twin bed. So why bother spending big bucks? Wait to spend that on a good big girl mattress for her when she's ready.
2. I've felt them all... and i'll be damned if there's much of a difference. They're all hard... and plasticy
3. Babies will sleep anywhere... including on a concrete floor if that's they're only option.. trust me, they dont' care.
4. Imagine how many times they will pee on it.... do want your child peeing on 600 dollars? Me either.
5. The economy is going to Shit right now.... its time for pinching pennies

Me and Britt looked at cribs yesterday and I have it narrowed down to 5. I have a favorite and Britt has his favorite! We will get mine....I always win! However, we knew we had to assemble the crib but we didn't know if the dresser came assembled. Did yours?
I saw my current obgyn at a pizza buffet once and couldn't crawl under the table fast enough. I know how it goes.
Hey I can help with the mattress! Go get (or borrow) this book: Baby Bargains. It's a miracle in print for the clueless. Get something firm - you can get either foam or coil. The book actually recommends foam but they say coil is fine. Then look at the number of coils - around 150 coils is perfect, 80 coils is too few, 250 coils is overkill. i think we picked like a $70-$80 mattress from Target. It's a Sealy Cozy Rest something. We got the $80 mattress. It is fine. Do get a mattress pad, though! I promise it won't smother your baby, and it's so much nicer than sleeping on a cold, plasticky mattress just covered by a thin sheet.
I lived in a really small town when I had my daughter, and my husband and I actually went out for drinks with my OB (post pregnancy, natch). That was a little weird. :)
Good work on the crib! I am with ya - I prefer to only sip coffee next to people who could possibly imagine me naked, but can never confirm.
We got a mattress that cost around $100 and I was assured by the "baby experts" at "Baby's World" that this is more than sufficient. Of course then I went and bought a ridiculously expensive dresser... but... the mattress was reasonable...
I second the "Baby Bargains" book suggestion. They also have a message board with lots of info too. We just got our mattress online at greatbeginningsonline.com . We went with the $100 Colgate Classica III foam mattress and got free shipping. Foam is so much easier to lift to change the sheets. Hope that helps.

I agree with the foam mattress vs. coil. They also come with square corners so they fit tighter with no gaps in the crib corners. $100.00 will get a nice mid-range mattress and leave you $100.00(+) for more cute baby clothes!!

Mattresses, I am sure you have gotten tons of adivce here, but I went out looking the other day, the lady said what is important is that it is FIRM! you want hard mattresses for the baby, so if hte expensive one is soft, its a no go! We have yet to buy one either, but thats what I learnt!

I know it's getting redundant, but I wanted to mention Baby Bargains, too! And they have a forum at http://www.windsorpeak.com/babybargains/ where people are constantly compaing deals/quality/etc of every baby item imaginable.
I fourth the Baby Bargains book suggestion - that book is awesome. I bought my daughter a $99 mattress that was recommended by that book.
You don't need a $200 mattress, honest.
Spend about $80 on one.
We have an $80 Sealy one (It's probably $100 by now)
Think of it this way - your kid is going to sleep on it for about 2 years. You don't need to invest a lot of money in it. Invest the money in her "Big Girl" bed mattress that she's going to use for 16 years instead :)
This is tough, my first thought is buy the cheapest --- I think the goal is that it fits snug, but most are standard size. I bought a $100 mattress but my child NEVER slept on it - oh well!!
If you are going to spend more money buy organic --- for health and environment reasons.

I have done a lot research into them and this companies seems like the best choice, since many companies sell "organic" mattresses that arnt really organic, and i dont believe in spending a lot of money for something thats not what it says it is. If you dont want organic though, then I agree with the other posters, there wont be much difference in quality for a $75 or a $200, so why spend more.
This is something I have no idea about - silly me thought that the mattress came with the crib until my nephew was getting one last year! I'm glad you and Mark survived the furniture assembly. Good test.

There is only one kind of mattress I use. Colgate. I love it. Extra firm and incredibly easy to clean and do the whole sheet changing thing. This is an awesome awesome thing and I am an expert and having an excessive amount of kids.

When we got a crib mattress (8 years ago), we spent a little less than 100 dollars (my four key doesn't work, don't ask). Glad you got the crib together and that you are doing so well in your pregnancy. I understand your humor and you can complain all you want. I have one child from IF treatments, she's 8 years old, and we're trying to have a second with IVF treatments. Trust me when I get pregnant, I'll have my complaints as well as being tired once it's born.

I had my 1st 7 years ago and did tons of research then- I thought the baby bargains book did a nice job with fair reviews (not always choosing the most expensive as top pick) and that helped me pick a good mattress....Good luck with everything!

Crib Mattresses Now for prices. Finding a good quality mattress under $100 is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Of course, you can find mattresses at even $79 but they’re not always firm enough or completely chemical-free. And if you can, avoid buying second-hand mattresses. Nothing beats a fresh new mattress for your little one!
