Complex, but fine.

Febrile seizures come in two funsize varieties: simple and complex.

At the beginning of the month, Olivia had two febrile seizures.  Simple, as we know now.  Even though anyone who witnesses a febrile seizure will tell you that it appears to be anything but simple.  Scary is more appropriate.

Febrile seizures are caused by fever.  Or, temperature, I guess.  Not necessarily how high, but how fast the temperature goes up.  It can happen at 100 degrees as easily as 104.  It all just depends on how fast the fever spikes.  A baby can have a febrile seizure and have a temperature of 101, if it spikes quickly from, say, 98 degrees.

Take Wednesday, for example.

Olivia was happy as can be all morning.  She went to the sitter.  She played, ate, napped, and just generally made everyone cheerful.  As per usual.  From what I hear, she was happly playing with her friend Addison until she fell over onto her side and had a damn seizure.

I mean, it never seems OK to type that.  It doesn't seem OK to read it.  It definitely doesn't feel good to live it.

So Olivia had a seizure, and it lasted 3-4 minutes.  The sitter was fabulous in every way, and had to endure the entire ordeal and call 911 and everything.  When the paramedics arrived, Olivia stopped seizing but was still unresponsive and limp.

To the emergency room, Jeeves!

I had just sat down at Panera and opened my laptop to finish up another Fan Page Friday post when I got the call.  I was 45 minutes from home, but I drove so fast that I got to the hospital shortly after Olivia.

What I saw was...well, quite literally complex.  A complex febrile seizure.

A simple febrile seizure happens once a day, lasts less than 5 minutes, and involves both sides of the body.  A complex febrile seizure involves more than one seizure per day, lasts more than five minutes, and may only involve one or both sides of the body.

Olivia was laying on the bed getting an IV.  Her entire body was shaking.  She didn't seem to notice me or hear me.  She was drooling.  She was grunting and her breathing was uneven.  Her heart was racing.  Her eyes and face twitched in rhythm with her entire body.

This went on for 8-10 minutes.  8-10 infuriating, panicky, horrible awful no good very bad minutes.

Finally, they decided that she was not going to come out of it on her own, and they gave her Ativan.  She went still and fell asleep.  We were transferred to the Children's hospital to be admitted.

Long story short, she stayed over night, had an EEG and a CT scan - both normal - and we are home and fine.  Maybe I'll write more about it later, but right now I'm exhausted of my own complaints and just want to play with Olivia and watch chick flicks all day.

After that first night, I snapped this picture of Olivia in her hospital baby jail:

That look of annoyance is not from a fever or seizure, but because the only cartoon I could find was Spongebob Squarepants.  And he's an asshole, which is apparent to even a baybee.

And here is Olivia today, tearing up the kitchen and sucking on some paprika while taking the skankiest smelling dump, evah:

Here's to January, kissing the fattest part of my ass.
I didn't proof read this post, so hopefully it makes sense.

(I feel the need to tell you that I stole the whole "fattest part of my ass" thing from Jen Lancaster.)

Wow - I'm glad Olivia is OK. Is there anything the doctors can do to help prevent this from happening again or is this a life long deal or what? I think you deserve a long massage and pampering. Poor momma!

So glad she is doing okay...must be so scary for you though! Is there anything they can do for her to make sure the seisures don't come back?

So sorry you are having to go through this. We will keep you guys in our thoughts. I know exactly what is feel like to watch as my mother has them and they are god-awefull. Hope this is all a fluke due to illness or teething for that matter and it goes away just as quickly as they started.

Damn, I am so, so sorry that you and your husband have to go through this...that poor Olivia has to go through it. What a nightmare. Just glad she's ok and hoping one day you'll be telling seizure stories with the seizures themselves long, long gone.

Holy shit. That is scary. And awful. I can't beging to imagine how you felt. I really, really hope everything stays good with O, and it doesn't happen again.

--- unrelated, just wanted to add that the word in the word verification is greaphea. Which I immediately pronounced as 'grappa' which is a type of european moonshine. Which you might need to drink at this point.

Scary, scary stuff. SO glad she's ok. :( B was running some super high temps earlier this week, and I was getting so paranoid. Ugh.

February is Monday. And great things happen in February.

Alright, Olivia. Enough already.

Your parents have had a rough enough time in this life. From now on, you must be healthy and charming at all times.

Feel better little one. You too, mom and dad.

Olivia,
Knock this shit off. Your mom, although a strong woman, doesn't need all this shit. I'm so so glad you're ok, but really, enough is enough.

I am so so so glad to hear that Olivia is okay. I have been worried.

I hope it never, ever happens again.

I feel like a total jerk for complaining that my baby was sick with just a fever. Poor Livi! This is sooo scary.

Poor baby! Poor Mama! I hope they stop or at least the doc's can figure out what's wrong!

Oh no! Poor baby! And poor Mommy!

First, SpongeBob is a complete asshole, but Patrick always makes me smile.

Second, you totally deserve Mother of the Year for being so brave with the seizures and for BEING ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITALOHMYGAWD. The picture of Livie in her jail cell tugs at my heart! Give her lots of smoochies and hugs and maybe some candy too. Oh, and definitely a new cute outfit from Gymboree.

Prayers for your precious babee. I hope you find out the cause soon, you are a great mom. And the part of kissing the fattest part of your butt... simply fabulous.

SarcastiCarrie said...

Listen to me and my advice: Do NOT google the febrile seizure or the complex febrile seizure or anything else. I did it for you so you don't have to.

You're welcome. Now, step away from the computer and hie thee to Gymboree for a Valentine's outfit. Red velvet is stylish this season. And an elestic bow for her hair.

I wish I had something smarter to say than I'm sorry... but I really am. I was horribly upset just reading about it, I can only imagine what it's like through mommy's eyes. Praying for your little girl.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I watched my fiance have a seizure once and it was the scariest thing ever... I can't imagine watching my child go through it!

I'm so glad she's home safe now. Are there steps you can take to keep her temp from spiking that way? Maris and I were worried!

Ugh -- I'm so sorry! You poor thing -- can only imagine how helpless you must feel watching something like that. I truly hope this is just a passing feverish phase that you can look back on and breathe a sigh of relief.

Oh my goodness. This sounds so awful. Glad to hear everything seems basically OK, but I hope this was the last one and you never have to do this again.

Wow that's awful. Must have been so scary. I would have freaked the f#ck out. I hope these go away for good. And I agree, Spongebob is an asshole. I don't allow that show to be viewed in my house, it annoys me so much. Here's hoping February has better things in store for you and yours.

kate said...

Oh my god Jen! I can't even imagine the fear. I'm so glad Olivia's better now. Are these seizures something that comes and goes with age?

rebecca said...

Wow, that is terrifying! I hope that the doctors can get to the bottom of why this is happening to Olivia.
On a lighter note, I love your writing...you were cracking me up from spongebob on!

Well this shit blows the nasty part of donkey balls I have every even thought of. I am so sorry you had to see all of this, esp w/o Mark being around.

We are thrilled that everything seems to be ok. So now that you have gone thru this crap you can be a tour guide in hell.

Hugs to all,
Kristin

Febrile seizure. Scariest shit ever to happen over here at Casa de Dummies. Even though this is my first time to your site (which is pretty awesome by the way), I have to say that I'm so sorry you had to experience it. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. When it happened to #1 he was 2 years old and he stopped breathing. Had to give him CPR and everything until the EMTs got there and did it without freaking out, shaking, or crying hysterically. He remained lethargic and hard to arouse for so long that we got a transfer to the Children's hospital closest to our house too. Turned out fine though, but anytime one of these dudes gets a fever I freak just a little.

Glad to see she's feeling better. I hope they figure it our soon or they just stop. I can't imagine holding my shit together through all that. Thinking of you and Olivia.

I'm so glad she's okay and I hope this never happens again. This would scare the crap out of me and thanks for blogging about it. I have a friend who this happened to her little girl and I had never heard of it, so good job helping other moms know about all this crazy scary stuff that can happen to our little babies. Hope you are doing okay!

And as always, she's adorable! you are so right about sponge bob too!

Wow, what a way to end the month - euh? I'm so sorry you had to deal with this again. I know all too well about the whole febrile seizures. My son had a long seizure at Old Navy in November and that experience will never leave my brain. He was in kiddie prison at the hospital too. Its crazy how the doctors make you feel like it normal when your kid is all twitching and foaming at the mouth. Be brave!

so sorry this has been happening. i myself am epileptic, and at times feel thankful that i'm the one who HAS the seizures (and subsequently doesn't remember them) as opposed to being my husband or kids who have to watch them. i'm sure you felt helpless. praying that they're but a distant memory soon!

omigod! i'm so glad your olivia is okay. i hope that she (nor you, nor her sitter) never has to endure this again. poor baby!

Poor little sweetheart. Sheesh if I had seen my son seizing and drooling and grunting I think I would have been incoherent.

Wow Jen - I'm reading your post and having flashbacks to when my daughter was born. She started having neonatal seizures her first day and was immediately placed into the NICU for all sorts of scary tests. Happily it's been seven years and we've made it through nail-biting neurological evaluations, phenobarbital withdrawal, and many sleepless nights...and she's totally fine. No seizures since the beginning...although I have to admit at times I still wait for the other shoe to drop.

I know it's hard at this moment to imagine that this too shall pass...but it will. And your amazing gift for humor will allow you to look back on this time and find the funny moments amongst all the crap.

Oh. My. Holy Ghost! You must be exhausted! What a horrible experience for ANY mom!! Poor babies...just out of curiosity, had she recently received her immunizations?

I'm so sorry you had to go through that and I hope it never ever ever happens again!

Wow, that is ridiculous. I hope she is feeling better. I just love your blog, have been reading it for several months now. Your Olivia is so cute.

And as Jen Lancaster would say, "There’s almost nothing sweetened apples and frosty pie crust can’t make better."
Hope this week is much better.

I have been following you for, like, forever, and i just had to delurk to say two things: 1) Febrile seizures suck! and 2) I absolutely adore Jen Lancaster. I love your blog.

Hi!
I was just wondering what ever happened with your little girl and the seizures? Did they ever find a problem?
The reason I ask is because my son has strange episodes about every month, he will put both arms down at his side, squeeze his fists, and shake his head back a forth. He just had one last night along with a high fever and it lasted longer than usual. So, off the er clinic to get him checked.

Any information would be helpful.
