Fact: I birth babies with rashy butts.
Olivia was the worst for sure because she always had some sort of redness and irritation that I was fighting. It would get better for a day or two, and then all of a sudden Hello Red Butt Baybee. But Ainsley was always rashy and now Adelle tries to fit right in too.
I would have sworn to you, over the past four years, that I tried everything to keep from getting diaper rash. Different brands of diapers. Keeping her super dry. Keeping her super clean. Only using wipes for dirty diapers but not wet diapers. But still, my babies would end up with diaper rash and a bad attitude no matter what. Bring on the diaper rash cream!
I'm not sure why it took me until kid #3 to figure out that I should be using diaper rash cream to prevent diaper rash instead of shaking my fists at the heavens and cursing it every time it showed up. It's like, "AHA! I am supposed to put this cream on her beefy little bottom all the time instead of just when it looks like it needs it! Who knew?"
Everyone. Everyone knew.
Except me, and maybe except you. But now you know! It is crazy how you can take care of babies for so long and feel like you actually know what you are doing, what with keeping them alive and fed and everything. And then all of a sudden you realize that you were missing something very simple and very useful all along.

Diaper rash cream. With every diaper change. Lucky for Adelle I discovered this revolutionary method in time to save her lots of sore butts and crankiness!
I've tried all different brands, and my very favorite for everyday prevention is Boudreaux's Butt Paste. It smells good and wipes off easily. I can't stand creams that are sticky and require lots of wiping to remove. I don't have that problem at all with Boudreaux's Butt Paste (I use the Original Butt Paste, but there are a couple of other options - All Natural Boudreaux's Butt Paste and Boudreaux's Butt Paste Maximum Strength). Plus it keeps away the burning heat of the evil Rashadon!

My favorite ways to treat/prevent diaper rash are free and easy: as much no-diaper time as possible, and squirting on a little breast milk during diaper changes.
I like zinc oxide, it doesn't matter what brand.

I always try to give her diaper free naked time every day so her butt can ''breathe". :-)
Air time, diaper cream. If it's really bad I'll rinse her off in the sink instead of using wipes, then use a blow drier to dry her off completely. The blow dryer trick works especially well with yeast.
Butt paste or balmex work well for us. Or if it doesn't clear up within a couple diaper changes we mix a pea size dab of Lotrimin and a pea size dab of hydrocortisone and that will zap it!
My oldest was allergic to disposable diapers and had rashes 100% of the time until we switched to cloth. Now she only wears them to bed and does okay. 2nd babe was in cloth until we moved to a home with a front load washer. Gag. So now she's in disposables and we're using Butt Paste often!! Love it!
Air! Let that little butt breathe! :) That and a good butt cream.
We use cloth and get very little rash. When I do need to use disposables, I love Boudreaux's Butt Paste. It is the only one I buy now.
We use plain cornstarch to treat a regular diaper rash and nystatin powder(the powder works much better for keeping the area dry than the cream or ointment) for a yeast infection. To help prevent rashes we usually do a thin layer of aquaphor at each diaper change.
Prevention? Boudreaux's or other after every poopy diaper. When that's not enough (post-antibiotic runs come to mind) several repeats of a thick smear of A&D ointment plus a generous dusting of baby powder on top generally does the trick.
My youngest son had the worst diaper rash constantly until I switched to Huggies Natural Care diapers. Since they are cloth-based, they aren't as irritating to his little bottom. We also like Anti-Monkey Butt!
Homemade diaper wipe solution and cloth wipes. 2 drops of tea tree oil, tablespoon of olive oil, 6 oz of water makes a solution. Use that on cloth diaper wipes. Never had diaper rash when baby was healthy.
Also, cloth diapers and washing in Charlie's detergent. My boy has sensitive skin and diaper rash is non existent unless he has a bad case of the runs.

I love Desitin creamy. We use it with every poopy change.
We use A&D Original Ointment. The smell isn't that great, but it is the only thing that has worked for my children. We use it on everything, including sunburns and adults and it seems to work miracles.
I love butt paste - we use it with our son.
Our Niece uses cloth diapers and coconut oil. That's right the kind you cook with.
We used Boudreaux's ALL the time. Love the stuff. Still use it sometimes on the almost 4 year old!
We have had the best luck with Triple Paste.
My poor baby got such bad diaper rash when we tried to change her diaper type. We tried everything to get rid of it with no luck. As soon as we switched back to her old diaper type it went away - I am never switching diapers ever again. Lol.

I heart Boudreaux. It's by far the best stuff I've tried, and I feel like I've tried everything. Protip: make sure their little bums are dry before putting on the cream, otherwise you're sealing wetness IN instead of OUT. I blow on my lil guy's butt to dry it and he thinks it's the funniest thing in the world. He's a little weird, though.

Used to like Boudreaux but then found CJ BUTTer and it is way better. Can use it with cloth diapers even, it is that gentle. Every diaper change, it is the best.
We use Desitin -- ointment for no rash and max strength cream for rash.
When my daughter was little I used the Desitin Maximum strength, which worked good enough if I used it after every change to prevent the diaper rash, but it was so messy. I also found out that the regular Desitin actually burns their skin & hurts if you put it on their skin when they have a bad rash where the skin is raw & red. My daughter had/has sensitive skin, like her mommy, & tummy issues, like her daddy. Even today at 4yrs. old we still have to use cream.
I now use Desitin Multi-Purpose ointment, which basically means it's clear!! It says, "helps protect, prevent, & relieve chapped or cracked skin from the drying effects of wind & cold weather." Plus works great on her eczema that she gets on her legs, & of course it helps protect/prevent diaper rash too! The best part is it doesn't make my daughter scream when I put it on her sore red little monkey butt, or anywhere else she needs it.
I mainly like it because you can use it all over the body & it less messy. So when I send my daughter to preschool she doesn't have to have a white mess all over her chubby little butt & the clear doesn't ruin her little panties or any of her clothes! Yes it seems a lot like petroleum jelly, in fact that's the main ingredient, but it also has mineral oil & cocoa seed butter, plus a few other things, that give it that extra little something to make it work great!
Greatest find ever was PINXAV. (pronounced "Pink Salve"). The pharmacist at a CVS told us about it and I swear it is miracle stuff. I'd never seen it or heard of it, but I now tell everyone about it! They keep it behind the counter for some reason (no...you don't need a rx for it!). It is awesome!!!
Let your baby's diaper area air dry when possible, and use barrier creams.

Our strategy was A&D ointment all the time, and if things got red, then we'd alternate with Desitin. I was not a fan of Boudreaux's - it was too slimy and wouldn't absorb or come off of my daughter's butt. But, yeah, the nurse at the hospital was all "just put a little on with every change and you'll be rash free."
I'd say this no matter who sponsored, but my favorite is Butt Paste! I buy the natural, but if someone gives us original we use that, too.
Here's my trick I invented when my boy farted mid application, but made me think we was going to poop on me, forever making me afraid to put my hands near his out-hole: squirt some diaper cream as deep in the crack as you can get it, then grab a butt cheek with each hand and mush the cheeks together until the cream is spread or the baby is laughing hysterically, whichever happens first.
I'm a desiring fan...butt paste is too hard to squeeze out. Also, our pharmacist told us that athletes foot cream has the same med as prescription diaper rash cream, so I keep a tube of that by the changing table, too!

As a nurse nothing beats the results of air . My favorite cure for a bad bottom rash on a baby , is to let them go diaperless for 8 hours. Just let the air get at that bottom and keep it completly dry!
Hands down, Weleda diaper cream kicks rashed butts. A lot of people claim they've found the best cream, and maybe their cream is good, but to them I ask, "have you tried it on yourself?" I happen to suffer a lot of nasty chaffed skin in the junk area (from exercising and during pregnancy) and Weleda heals my skin quick! Super quick, and doesn't get all over. And it worked on my kid great too, and he was a very rashy and sensitive skinned babe. Better than burts, better that the other natrual creams and wahm creations. Its just really good, reliable cream. Also, drying off babies bum with a dry cloth before putting a diaper helps too (dry cloth wipes are good for this).
My daughter gets rashes often even though we use diaper cream every change! We either use A and D or Destin.
The best to cure rash has been a mix of Destin (with zinc oxide), Lotrimin and Hydrocortisone
I always just used Vaseline, creates a great barrier over their skin from whatever is making them rashy! I'm a peds nurse and that's what we recommend to a lot of parents. It's cheap too!
If you are using a premoistened wipe the first step is to stop using them. A lot of the times they do not allow the bottom to dry. I am a NICU nurse and when we started using these premoistened wipes I saw a lot worse rashes a lot more frequently. I like to use a disposable soft wipe and use warm water to clean the diaper area. You can also get puppy pee pads and put them under the baby during a nap if they are on their belly, or during tummy time. Air is the best thing. You can also use a hair drier on low heat to help dry out the area. When you do have diapers on the baby you can use an over the counter butt paste or a prescription one like questran.

In a class we attended prior to birth the nurse with 30 years experience who was teaching the class told us that Aquaphor was a product she recommended for everyday use to prevent rash. She explained "white creams" with zinc are not intended for long term use and can actually cause irritation. Aquaphor goes on clear and very easy to clean. My husband has actually used it and I have a family member who is bed ridden and his nurses use Aquaphor on his bed sores. We used it on EVERY diaper change from birth to age 33 months (up to one month ago). Now we are potty trained, but she got her first rash one week into potty training. So I have reached for it a time or two when she says it hurts down there and needs her medicine.
Of course air time is great for a sore butt... but... a friend recommended to me to make a paste made from Aquaphor (one of the best products ever) and Maalox. Yep, the stuff you drink for your tummy! She told me it neutralizes any acidity, not to mention that your baby will have a minty-fresh-smelling butt. Just combine the two until it's pasty enough to spread on. I felt like a mad scientist mixing it up and experimenting on my little guy but I swear it worked! I was mixing up batches more than once. Air time as well as powder in every diaper change for prevention and for stubborn rashes caused by food allergies etc. we used Pinxav and homemade triple paste which is equal parts of cornstarch, aquaphor and maalox mixed into a paste (recipe from our ped!) these have always worked great for us!!
We use Boudreaux's when the twins start getting red. We also do baking soda butt soaks (sit in the sink in water + baking soda).
Boudreaux also makes a spray that we use every night before bed. If something pops up, we use but paste or aquaphor.
We use generous amlunts of Balmex multipurpose healing ointment for every diaper change (it's clear and has aloe and other botanicals in it, so not messy, and quite soothing. I even use it on myself for minor skin irritations. Also, it has no prabens it). We also use the "sensitive" wipes for every diaper change and make sure we dap everything dry with a soft cloth before the ointment and diaper go on. And we try to change diapers often. For night-time, instead of Balmex, we use either Dessitin maximum strength, or preferably Sudocream - which is British, but great if you can find it (and unlike Dessitin, does not have parabens in it). I figure i can deal with the white mess once a day. Plus, by the time you get to that diaper in the morning, the white stuff is not nearly as abundant or sticky any more.
I am the newest major or rashy butt land! Seriously, my baby has a prescription that does not help!! Last night she had naked butt time and peed on everything! But Mr. Smith's rash cream seems pretty good...

I'm a huge Butt Paste fan around here so much so that when the drug rep came around with samples I anxiously jumped on the bandwagon. I'm a podiatrist (foot and ankle doc). He had read the sign wrong and thought pediatrician. I'm pretty sure he was wondering after the fact what exactly I was using Butt Paste on the foot for. Oh well. I love that stuff and free is even better1
Meh...I'm boring! No original or interesting advice here. BUT we found that A&D was the best for us. I think it's probably pretty similar in texture to Butt Paste. I HATED Desitin (at least the creamy variety...not sure if there's another kind out there). It did absolutely nothing to prevent rash or protect the skin when a rash was already present.
For a really stubborn rash, I use Rx Nystatin on bottom, top it with Maximum Strength Desitin, and cover it all with medicated baby powder to set the cream layers so they don't wipe off inside the diaper. For milder rashes, I like Aquaphor.
My daughter was on antibiotics every day for the first two years of her life, and she would get NASTY diaper rashes caused by the yeast buildup from the meds. I got the BEST advice from a pharmacist when the dr prescribed a strong rash cream that was gonna cost me an arm and a leg cuz it wasnt covered by my insurance. Here it is: GENERIC ATHLETES FOOT CREAM. Seriously. cheap, effective like ive never seen. I would powder her after wiping and then apply the cream and within HOURS, people.... BOOM! Clear ass on a baby. the cutest little smooth baby bootm ever. You. Are. Welcome.

We were lucky to spend most of our time rash free AFTER we figured out our girl's food sensitivities (from what I ate during BFing). When rash reared up, we used Beorduex Butt Paste until it cleared again.
We cloth diaper during the day, and that makes for a rash-free hammy baby butt almost all the time. Still, we use A&D ointment (original, no zinc) with disposables and coconut oil with cloth diapers - both work great!

pinxav is the best. it's actually local (cleveland made!) and you'll find it behind the pharmacy counter. it's amazing! it wipes off easily. i'm not a fan of the smell, but it has cleared up horrible diaper rashes over night! i've used it on my kiddos for the past 8 years!

Before I had kids, I worked with a lady who kept a tube of Boudreaux's Butt Paste in her office. She used it for all kinds of things from wind-burned or sunburned skin to chapped lips. When my first child was born she gave me a big tube of it and it was the best thing EVER for diaper rash. I have three kids now and they haven't had too many issues with diaper rash but part of that is from putting on Boudreaux's before it becomes a problem. Any time their teething, I go ahead and slab on some Boudreaux's before those dreaded teething poops come!! Love the stuff!

My Grandma always told me to let the babies "air out" for at least 15 minutes after a diaper change at least once a day. She said a bare bottom getting air on it was the best prevention there was. I don't know if it was because I followed her advice (she had 17 kids, so I tended to trust what she said,lol) but my daughter never had a diaper rash, ever

We have never tried this paste but it sounds like it really works. We have always tried to keep the area dry and if there is a problem we would let them run around without a diaper as much as possible to get air on it.
I kick rash by bathing the rash area with colloidal oatmeal and then letting it air dry as long as possible.

We have a 2 year old & he has thankfully never had a rash, we change his diapers as soon as needed, always apply cornstarch baby powder & when anything looked pinker than usual we used Desitin & also powder to prevent a rash.

My Mom taught me that sometimes you have to air dry a baby's bottom & make sure that you wash your baby with mild soap. PS check with doctors when you give prescriptions because some of them cause rashes

My mom swore by cloth diapers when I was a kid made of 100% cotton. I think this is smart because if air can't get in then rashes will grow by keeping moisture in!

I use to put diaper rash cream on their bottom as soon as I seen any sign of redness. I would also lay them in the floor on a blanket and let them go diaperless for a little while. thank you!

A&D ointment always works for me.
Lots of ways. Sun and air time outside, frequent changes and baths, etc. I avoided them by avoiding chocolate. That hurt, y'all.

I adopted my son when he was out of the diaper phase so we never had a chance to use butt paste (He does find the name funny, however). But I will keep it in mind for a baby shower I am attending soon, it will make a great addition to the gift basket I'm putting together.
