I took Olivia to the doctor on Tuesday. We got some good news - no more blood in the stool. The Alimentum is here to stay. Not that I'm thrilled to be paying that much, but it would suck to have to keep trying out different formula and going back to the doctor with poopy diapers.
Since I like to be prepared, I took a print out of the symptoms of silent reflux, hilited the things that are happening to Olivia, and wrote notes on her reactions to eating. Balls (Ovaries?) to the wall, right? I wanted some medicine.
The doctor wholeheartedly agreed that she had reflux. Great! Then she said they don't like to give medication before trying other things first. Mmmmkay...I guess that makes sense.
The verdict: 1/4 tsp of Maalox or Mylanta 15-20 minutes before eating, and a tablespoon of rice cereal in her bottle.
After our doctor appointment, we went to Target and happily bought the Maalox and rice cereal. She was completely zonked all day after starting this. Great! She must be feeling better and getting some rest!

My baby screamed her head off from 5 am until midnight yesterday. Screamed. As in WTF GIMME BACK MY UMBILICAL CORD YOU FLAMING MORON!
I called the doctor at 2 and didn't hear back until 5. But I quit giving her the Maalox at her 2 o'clock feeding to see if it helped. Turns out that is exactly what the doctor said to do.
Am doctor, apparently. Will demand $165/hour when I go back to work.
However, in some sick twisted plot to test the sanity of everyone in our home, he also said that if she seems better after taking away the Maalox, then give it to her again tomorrow and see if she screams. Keep going with the rice cereal. Then call the office.
I wanted to tell him that I would do that if I could also shove the bottle of Maalox up his ass, see if he cries, then take it out, and if he feels better, test it again. I did not. I am only that weird in my mind (and on my blog).
By midnight, when things hadn't improved, I quit with the rice cereal, too. This was getting to be ridiculous! She was in pain before, but crying for a few minutes after a bottle - this was like a marathon of screaming that made me so anxious that I thought I had the flu yesterday because I was making multiple Oh-No-Here-Comes-le-Puke trips to the toilet. (le Puke never came.)
Her poor little face had dried up tears all over it.
Last night went pretty well. She's back to the pre-satan Olivia, having trouble eating and crying for a few minutes after a bottle. She slept for 2 hour increments all night. She is sleeping now.
If I don't get some Zantac today, I am heading over to the doctor's office with that bottle of Maalox...
Bah.

Ugh! Poor thing! And poor you! And the doctor is a sadist. I am sorry. I hope you get your Zantac and that it helps and that she sleeps for twelve hours tonight.
I took my 3.5 month old to the ER this past weekend because OMG, I thought I had poisoned him with formula. I know exactly how you feel. You just want your baby to be better, to be normal. One thing I will say is when my baby was your baby's age, I thought I had made a mistake conceiving. All those years when I was trying to conceive why didn't someone tell me I would want to throw myself from a bridge when the baby arrived. But now, 3 months later and I already can't wait for the next one. In a few short months, she'll steal your heart right out of your chest. You are close to getting the smiles, it makes a huge difference. Hang in there.
Ah, Reflux. I know ye well, you be-yotch.
Why drs. keep suggesting rice cereal is beyond me. I don't know one baby with reflux that has reacted favorably to that. My daughter took 1/2 of a prevacid three times a day. I thought there was something wrong with her because she never smiled or laughed or anything. Turns out she was just in pain for seven months!
I promise it will get better!!
Oh goodness! I sure hope that highly paid dr. figures out something better than torture to your baby. And SOON! She is beautiful, even if she isn't feeling well.

I hope Olivia feels better soon! My 10 day old baby was also screaming his head off last night and I was getting anxious because I don't know what was upsetting him!
Also, I don't know if Olivia has bad diaper rash, but my baby had it bad. The skin on his butt felt like leather. Desitin did absolutely nothing. My Russian mother-in-law suggested using Sea Buckthorn oil (Oleum Hippophaes) and it worked absolute MAGIC overnight. I was amazed. It's pretty oily and it is quite a colorful orange/yellow color, but I wanted to share this magical solution. We found it in a Russian store, but you can probably order it over the internet. Good luck!

I stumbled across your blog from someone else and I feel your pain. When my son was only 9 days old he had blood in his stool and had been puking and had very loose stools. I told the pedi that something wasn't right and she told me to wait. Three days later he was admitted to the hospital where he stayed for two weeks. Thankfully everything was okay but it was a rough ride. He was DX with reflux and a milk allergy. The pedi put him on a formula called Neocate. It was VERY expensive ($140 a can which you can buy through the company for cheaper) but it was the most broken down formula you can buy. With that and the Zantac he improved. He was still very colicy but the loose poops stopped completely and the spit-up slowed down. Maybe you could talk to your pedi and see if that will help your daughter.

Ugh. Feel your pain! Unfortunately for us, we never found the magic "reflux/colic-be-gone" combo. We tried everything from Zantac, to rice ceral, to Allimentum (which besides the cost, don't you LOVE the smell?) to sleeping upright and NOTHING worked. Kid screamed bloody murder for the first 5 months of his life. Once we started solids though he seemed much better! Hope you find what works for her!
Poor baby girl. And poor you too, how awful! We've had that horrible screaming in pain too and it is terrible. (She didn't calm down until we gave her a bath, she likes baths.) I hope she feels better soon.

I hope she gets some relief soon (and you too!). My 5 month old was on Zantac but it didn't make a difference in his attitude. Nico's a spitter, but a happy one...just arches a lot and needs his crib mattress inclined. She is absolutely adorable!!!

Oh goodness this sounds sooo familar. You need to bust into your doctor's office and DEMAND the ZANTAC. It made such a difference for my son..and the kid finally got some much needed peaceful sleep. I totally feel for the both of you been there. I hope things get better.

One of our girls has TERRIBLE reflux requiring 24-cal $70/can Neocate and rice cereal. I could write a book on the fixes we have tried so far. Long story short, though, keep your girl at an incline while sleeping and while awake. Lying flat makes life hell for them. And feed almost completely upright...we're talking child sitting up and leaning back only slightly. Good luck!

Poor little babygirl... the thing that helped my son the most with his colic/reflux/yeah-hi-I-don't-like-that-formula-try-something-more-expensive-k-thanksness was switching to Playtex Drop-In bottles. It's like it was a miracle bottle or something. And from silicone to latex nipples, because they were easier for him to nurse. Mylicon drops and LOTS of bouncing and singing and crying (him and me) later, we finally got to a happy place. It DOES get better! :)

olivia is going to be fine -- her system is still adjusting to being outside of the womb.
maytali had a brutal combo of colic and silent reflux, and she somehow managed to conquer it like a champ. i will warn you, however, that she still refuses to sleep through the night at 10.5 months :)

Get your doc to prescribe the formula (even if it's available without one) and your health insurance may pay for it if it's medically necessary for her.

My oldest had reflux. The doctor kept treating her for a sore throat - it was the acid burning her throat.
A nurse told me to put something under the front legs of her basinet to prop it up a bit and put rice in her bottle. I think I put in more rice than formula. But that helped a lot.
Relux is so hard because they are so miserable! Good Luck! My prayers are with you!

My baby has relfux too! He has to sleep in his swing because of it. :/
I had no idea because he didn't have the extreme spitting up but his peditrician noticed it right away and he's now on Zantac. It helps but it taste like battery acid poor little man.

You blog is the very first one I found. I googled something or another related to fertility and ended up here. I didn't know people were blogging about trying to get pregnant. That was a year ago. I read all you old posts and followed you through your second IVF cycle, to getting pregnant and now little Olivia.

I hope you learned your lesson and won't be so selfish and give up so easily on breastfeeding next time. Breastfeeding isn't about losing weight or saving $$, although it can provide those benefits. It's about what's best for the baby.
