Talking is hard. Making baby food is not.

You know how sometimes? You want to say something? And you know that what you are saying may potentially offend your audience? Even if you don't mean for it to happen, it is inevitable?

And then said audience is probably all I DON'T CARE JUST STOP TALKING IN QUESTIONS GAHD!

For example, maybe someone has said to you:

I would never go as far as to do IVF.
My babies will be breastfed.
I would never settle for an induction.
I would never get an epidural.
I could never go to work and leave my babies with someone else.

Because people have said those things to me! And, you know, those are things that I actually DO. And of course you think, "well, what the hell is that supposed to mean?!" And then you can't help but take a little bit of offense, because HELLO?! I do ALL OF THOSE THINGZ!

Anyway.

I think store-bought baby food is nasty and I don't want to feed it to Olivia. And I'm sure someone out there is reading this as they shove a soft bite spoon full of Gerber peaches into the mouth of their teeny preshus. And they are totally thinking, "you stuck up snobby bitch!"

But seriously? I did IVF! And feed my baby that horrible poison formula! Via bottle! After I numbed my entire body during her induced birth! Just before I drop her off with the babysitter to raise her while I selfishly pursue my rockin' career!

The very least I can do is make her food - she clearly does not have much chance in this world otherwise.

So, I made the green beans, and we saw how well it went over (not well, incase it is unclear). I made about 25 servings for $1, so if she doesn't like it she can suck it - I'm going to keep trying.

But I decided to try peaches next.
Peaches!
Millions of peaches! Peaches for Livi!

Yeah...mom...they're....delicious? Or...well, yeah, they're fine...I can haz oatmeal?

I made 25 servings of peaches for $1.47.

We pay $38/can for formula, so forgive me for getting totally hot and bothered over how freaking CHEAP this all is! And easy, too.

Now, just in case I offended you with my one tree-hugger type opinion, I offer you this:

BAYBEE THIGHS!
How can there not be world peace when there are baybee thighs?! HOW?

Baby thighs. Nom nom.

I tried to make my son's baby food. He hated it. I kept trying. He kept hating it. I tried variations, adding cinnamon, and quacking like a duck while I fed it to him. He still hated it.

Gerber?

Yum.

Meh. Whatever.

OMG this was the best.post.ever.

Its so true...my sister in law told me to pick my babysitter wisely because that is who would be raising my kid. nice.

Oh Baybee thighs are my favorite snack!!!!

I know what you mean about sounding like a tree huggin hippie...I live around tons of um, drives me nuts but hell yeah I made the baybee food. Thank god for my stick blender and chef knife. The only things you really need, oh and about 20 minutes to make it.

Have you tried adding some mushed up banana to the green beans or yams? Then slowly reduce the amount of said none offending veggie.

Jen she is just beautiful! IVF or a hot night after dancing on a bar, she is here and you love her w/everything you have. nuff said.

I make all my son's baby food too. So cheap! But sometimes it drives me crazy when I make a whole batch of something and he won't eat it because both time and money were wasted. Oh well.

OMG...cutest baby thighs...thank you!

Thanks for this post. I know just what you mean. So many things haven't gone as planned for us--we had every intention of cloth diapering (ha!) and though I am still breast feeding, every day is a challenge. And, if this makes you feel better about the cost of the formula, breast feeding isn't "free." I've spent hundreds on the pump, the pump accessories, milk storage bags, appointments with lactation consultants, prescription medicine to treat yeasty nipples (yes, delightful), etc. And, like you, I'm keeping the dream alive of making home made babyfood. One question--what do you use to strain the food? Everyone says "use a strainer" but what exactly do they mean? This feels like a dumb question, but this is one kitchen gadget I know nothing about.

Isn't it funny how we can be offended by the simplest things not meant to be offending. I was LUCKY enough not to have to do IVF, I'm able to breastfeed, didn't need an induction (she came 2 weeks early on her own) or epidural. But I do HAVE to send her to a sitter. And because I'm a goddess of a mother (insert eye roll) I too plan to make her baby food because well, I'm cheap when it comes to that sort of stuff.

So anyway, where do you get your recipes for the baby food. Obviously I don't need the ones for green beans, LOL.

Gerber IS gross! But, it is also food, and that's what my second baby got because I was finishing my dissertation when he was born. I made everything for my first. Then, around eight months, I got sick of the gross babyfood and made him switch to finger foods so that I could just cook one meal for both kids. Even then I had two people thinking I was judging THEM because they still fed purees to their older children. Whatever man! I am just LAZY!

I. Love. Your. Blog. I've been reading for awhile and I just had to comment... love the baybee thighs!

Hey, whatever works right? I've thought of the whole puree baby food as well...we'll see when we get to that point.

LOVE baybee thighs! Livi is SO adorable!

Eh, too much work for me, but if you want to do it...more power to you!

Adorable baby thighs (and the rest too)!

It gets better when you don't even have to give them a whole separate meal from what you are already eating. It's awesome!

Also, those socks that Olivis is sporting are the shit!

I feel you on the easy baby food thing.

However...I did not realize how easy baby food was to make until my kid was 2 1/2 and I made cream of broccoli soup from scratch--and while whirling boiled bits of broccoli around in my blender and making delicious broccoli paste I thought, "Holy crap! This would have made awesome baby food! What the hell was I SMOKING when I bought all those jars of food?!?!"

So yeah. I was a little late to the baby food epiphany. Also? I fed my baby poison in a bottle AND Gerber jars of death AND put her in landfill clogging disposable diapers. Clearly, I am Satan in Mommy form. :)

lol - yes, baby thighs rock!

I plan on making Kasen's food so I'm glad to hear how easy it is... and how cheap!

Because I'm cheap, er, thrify.

Mix your awesome-mommy green beans with some rice cereal. Maybe she'll chow down then.

Anonymous said...

Dude, I am SO WITH YOU on the baby food. For some reason I'm wanting to make our own. We haven't even started with the rice cereal yet (2 more weeks, ish), but I'm already formulating a plan on how to do this whole make-my-own thing.

Can you tell us what you do? Like how did you make the green beans? I try to look online but I get all overwhelmed. I have one of those food masher things but I don't know if I can really do it all without one of those baby food maker things and those are expensive. Hrmph. Anyway. Happy food making.

Mmm, delicious baby thighs.

I've never bought a jar of baby food either. I usually just feed her whatever we are eating. Here baby, have some roast beef.

I think it's great!!! Keep up the good work.

Heather said...

I think its cool - are you following a book or just cookin' & puree'in? Please share the easiness!

Miss Tori said...

So do you put them in little ziploc storage bowls or baggies to freeze and store? Or do you buy little jars to put them in?

Heck, I think if you have the time to make O's own food, more power to ya!

Mmmm, peaches. I'm glad I brought one with me to work today. :-)

i want to try to make some baby food! can you tell us how you do it?

Courtney said...

That is freaking awesome! I never realized it would be that cheap especially when how high priced things can be! How many peaches/green beans did you use to make the 25 servings? Do you use the ice tray method of freezing portions? Ok i will shut up now!

Loretta said...

That's great! I plan on making my own baby food when the time comes. How hard can it be to dump a bunch of stuff in the food processor then scoop it into ice cube trays? Not hard, methinks. Good for you!

Minta said...

Hooray for cheap easy food for Livi!!!

After $38 a can for formula cheaps is a new a welcome surprise, I'm sure.

She's much too preshus for words.

Bah, everyone who's all judgey with their opinions can go kick rocks. SO glad to know homemade baby food is so cheap!

Oh my goodness...I should've known not to read your blog with my lil' man asleep on my chest. You had me crackin' up! I'm glad to hear positive stuff about making your own baby food cuz I want to do it when the time comes. BTW, where do you get the jars or containers to store it in? Maybe that's a stupid question, but I haven't had time to research with my PhD in Google lately due to the peapod I carry around in my arms all day long.

KandiB said...

Everything about our little LadyBug is equally unnatural except add in a c-section and that we even switched to Costc-ho formula! I'm sure we should be banned from parenthood.

I figure whatever works.
I think it's amazing how all those little rolls etc look so wonderful on babies and so shitty on me.

You're an inspiration, and thanks to Olivia for using those baybee thighs to bring about world peace! I'm glad to hear it's not too difficult to make your own baby food, and I had no idea it was that cheap too :)

You're going all Baby Boom* on us!! Please share your recipes ASAP. I'm going the Gerber route at the moment because I can barely cook my husband a good meal, but you give me motivation to try it on my own. Plus, the savings could equal an extra trip to the Gymboree. Squeee!!!

*I hope you've seen Baby Boom or else you will not find this hilarious.

We are looking for the green light for solids in 2 weeks. So far "the plan" is to make it ourselves. It does look super easy. What recipes are you following?
Mommy LOATHES green beans so I don't know how I am going to be able to make them, much less feed them to Mr. Miles.
YAY for super cheap-homegrown baby food!
NOM, NOM on the baybee thighs! Miles has a set almost as lovely. I will definitely have to take a pic!

I heart baby thighs!

A great site for baby food suggestions by age is www.wholesomebabyfood.com. It isn't hippie dippy, but it offers real ideas for little people. I made all of my own baby food and used this site. Even better, it is F-R-E-E.

I only post anonymously because I can't get it to take my google account.

Anonymous said...

I'm not trying to be one of those annoying "anon" posters..I'm just way too lazy to sign up for an account...
My name is Nikki.

Anyway, my co worker made all her baby's food, and she said that not only did she save tons of fat cash, she really believes that by doing so, she influenced her son (who is now 7) to make healthy food choices. He chooses fruits and veggies as after school snacks rather than chips/cookies/delicious treats that are bad for you.

So who knows? You do what's right for you, and fuck everyone else right up their high and mighty asses with a pineapple.

Jen, I heart your blogs, and Olivia is a beautiful baybee girl.

I started out making my own baby food, but quickly discovered that some foods were easier to make than others. Green beans? Easy! They blend right up. Then I spent HOURS making sweet potatoes because my blender just would not make them smooth enough to satisfy the baby. There were always lumps. So I bought jarred sweet potatoes. Then applesauce, because I didn't feel like making applesauce. And once you start down that dark road of buying jarred food, it's just soooo easy to put away your blender.....

It became a lot easier once chunkier food was okay. Some jarred stuff, some homemade stuff, depending on taste and time and consistency. Best of all worlds.

You make me laugh, and thank you for that, because Oscar slept all of 45 minutes last night.

Making baby food is super easy, especially when you do what I do, which is hand your baby a chunk of banana or a green bean.

I used to look down my nose at people who had c-sections and epidurals. I was going to have a home birth! Then Oscar was breech. I love the universe's sense of humor. I will never judge anyone again.

I'm so lazy when it comes to baby food. Ben didn't want much to do with it until he was 7 1/2 months, which was nice because like I said, lazy. And now it's like, here, have some cheerios while I'm eating so you stop bumming off my food. I don't know what I'll do when he stops getting all his nutrients from milk. Uh, I guess I'll have to make real meals.

Also, kudos for making baby food on the cheap! I totally agree that commercial baby food tastes gross (to me, anyway). And I'm all about the cheap. It's my favorite!

Jen,
You crack me up. I've been reading your blog for awhile and our babies are only one day apart. Anyway, I am starting my baby on solids and want to make her food as well. Thanks for the encouragement about how easy it is. Love the baby thighs!

We make Lucy's baby food and A. she loves it. B. I feel super earth-mother-esque since I'm cloth diapering and all so I might as well keep on truckin down that road and C. It's damn cheap! Love it! Smooches to you and the baby thighs!

If you are going to used jarred baby food, use Beechnut. I worked on a Beechnut/Gerber case a few years back and trust me, use Beechnut. I have seen the factories!
