Patent Ductus Arteriosis

Ainsley has this. Every baby has this, actually, but it usually heals shortly after they are born. But since she is a drama queen was early, hers isn't healing.  Everyone is pretty sure that's why she really isn't making any progress.  She breathes way too fast and doesn't get enough oxygen without help from vapotherm.

So, she's going to have surgery.

I'm really nervous for her.  She's so little.  But I'm so glad that we are finally, finally doing something to help her progress.  She started out kicking so much ass, and things have just stayed status quo for a few weeks now.  You can tell it is work for her to breathe.  They say it will be a terrible few days, and then it will be better for her.  I think about them cutting her to get at her tiny little heart and...ugh.  It just has to be OK, ya know?

I don't mean to sell her short.  Ainsley is really an impressive tiny human.  She's nearly doubled her birth weight.   They've increased her feeds several times, and she tolerates them all perfectly.  She is so NOMable, it's borderline insanity.

She's gone from this:
2 pounds, 3 ounces.
That's Mark's hand.
Her future's so bright, she's gotta wear shades.

To this:
Must stretch, in preparation of hefting around those adorable chins.
No, mom!  This is my bad side!
Stop trying to put that giant ass paci in my  mouth.
I'm looking at you, Nurse.
Oh, you know.  Just chillin before my surgery tomorrow.

From one 32 week preemie mom to another, sending you lots of good thoughts. We had a PDA scare with my son as well, but fortunately his did end up healing without surgery. I'm sure your beautiful Ainsley will come through with flying colours!
You're doing an amazing job, Jenn...make sure you take good care of yourself too during this time!

from what i've heard, the pda surgery is easy peasy- done right at the bedside. i wish that our 'little' one was having the surgery. they gave her 2 rounds of indocin (sp?), and it got smaller, but it's still there. since she is asymptomatic, they are letting her be. grrr. ainsley is a champ- she is gonna rock that surgery! love and light to you all!

Best of luck to the little one. A ligation is no picnic, but if they can't close it pharmacologically and she's not doing well clinically, then it's her best option.

She is adorable...

From what I've heard, PDA surgery among preemies happens quite often, so I'm sure the docs are quite good at it. I, however, can't imagine thinking about my child having surgery on her tiny little heart! I'll be praying for you & Ainsley tomorrow! She's quite a cutie...I love the first two recent pictures of her best...the lifting the arms & the "No, mom" ones! Isn't it funny how a preemie can have a double chin!?

Thinking of you and Ainsley. The PDA surgery on a preemie is pretty routine for those docs. But when it's your tiny little baby that they're working on. Scary. She is adorable as can be and very impressive!

She's so cute- I'm so happy to finally see pictures of her! :)

I'm surprised that they've let the PDA go on for this long. Colby had PDA issues too, but within the first week he was given multiple courses of indomethesin to close the PDA. When it didn't look like that was going to work surgery was scheduled when he was 7 days old. (Thankfully, in an amazing turn, an extra course of meds closed it literally hours before surgery) They wouldn't try feeds or take him off of breathing support until his PDA was taken care of. It always amazes me how different NICUs can function... but I guess it doesn't matter as long as the babies come out healthy in the end! :)

Best of luck to little Ainsley and YOU. :)

Keeping her in prayer and having my NICU drama queen and king do the same!

Dre said...

She is most NOMable! Yummy! She does kick ass, and she will rock this surgery. Any surgery on babies is scary (hell, the damn ear tubes freaked me out), so just do what you can to make it through. I will be praying for her to get back to tough-ass shape to run that NICU!

Kerrik said...

She looks pretty strong and strapping to me. She has survived so much so far, I believe she will come through this like a champ!

Oh, Jen. Tough times for everyone. Thinking of you tomorrow! It's a surgery they do a lot of, so they shouldn't have any surprises - and Ainsley looks like she can cope with anything, bless her. Those chins...! Yes. Nommable in the extreme.

Ainsley is super cute! I will say that when I worked in pediatrics, the PDA surgeries always went really well. The first few days are super sucky and to Mom and Dad probably the first week or more seems sucky, but babies are so resilient!
