Again, with the seizures.

I mean, seriously.

We had our pediatrician appointment at 11 on Thursday.  The morning went OK.  Olivia was fussy, but ate well and went down for a nap.   I had to wake her to leave for the doctor.  We got there right on time.  When I get out of the car, I always pop my head over the window like a total douche and try to surprise Olivia.  It usually makes her laugh.  This time, though, I found her foaming at the mouth.

Seizure.

So I wait it out.  It is about a minute or so until she stops.  I literally run into the pediatrician office, throw my credit card at the nurse and tell her about the seizure.  They let us go right back to an exam room.

Apparently, the phrase "seizure in the car" grants you all sorts of cool privileges, like three nurses, and a doctor who runs into the room 30 seconds after you get there.

Olivia's just miserable.  She is groaning and writhing and is burning up with a 104.1 temperature.  The normally laid-back pediatrician says she is totally uncomfortable with the way she looks - get thee to an ER immediately.  She'll call and let them know you're coming, and that they might want to consider a spinal tap.

I'm an ugly crier.  I spend the next 10 minutes trying not to cry, just trying to wait until I got to the parking lot at least before I lose my shit.  Waiting for confirmation of where to go, and waiting for a dose of Tylenol.  Texting everyone.

We leave.  It takes about 20 minutes to get to the ER.  I speed.  I dare someone to pull me over.

You assume that when your doctor tells you to go immediately, and calls ahead, that you will be seen quickly.  And we were, in fact, seen - 2 hours later.

There were barfing kids everywhere.  Olivia never cries, just dozes and groans.  She eats a little.  Her temperature goes down to 102 and that is surprisingly thrilling considering her recent heat wave.  Mark gets lost in the clusterfuck of one way streets by the hospital but we're still waiting by the time he gets there.

A woman is talking about how her sister's babies are too skinny and it's disgusting, and how that's probably why they are always sick.  She keeps feeding her sick kid big pieces of chocolate so he won't cry.  I want to kick her in the throat, and I also feel guilty for not being able to fatten Olivia up.  Maybe it is why she's sick right now.

I feel physically ill.  I wonder if I can vomit in the trash can while holding Olivia.  I doubt it, but there is already vomit all over the place, so maybe I can just vomit on someone else's pile and nobody will know. Maybe I will vomit on Skinny Baybee Hater Laydee.

We get back to our room and Olivia is still miserable.  We meet with a McSteamy-looking doctor.  He tells us that our pediatrician suggested a spinal tap to check for meningitis.  He  is going to meet with the attending and they will come back and let us know.

Olivia falls asleep.  McSteamy comes back with another doctor, and Olivia smiles at them. The little shit hasn't smiled all day.  She knows a handsome doctor when she sees one.  But he has on a wedding ring, and so she just goes back to sleep.  McAverage-Looking Attending decides that no spinal tap will happen because meningitis baybees don't smile.

Catheter.  A little bacteria in her urine.  Treating a Urinary Tract Infection, but fairly certain that she Just Has A Virus.  Realize that there is another saying that is as infuriating as Maybe If You Just Relax.  Consider changing blog name, but am afraid that people will think I have herpes.

(I don't have herpes.)

We are discharged.  I realize that it is a fucking blizzard outside.  It takes me and Olivia two hours and ten minutes to make the drive home, which usually takes 25 minutes.  Olivia doesn't make a peep the entire way.  I hope that she's OK.

She sleeps all night.  Still has a fever Friday morning.  Fussy all day.  No apetite.  Spits out her antibiotics, for no reason because they taste really good, yum, I should get some of these.  We survive the day.

I start dinner.  Shake and Bake pork chops because I am fancy.  Obviously.

Mark calls with good news and bad news.  Good news: out of work early.  Bad news: a semi lost its spare tire on the highway, and Mark hit it.  New car is fucked.  I forgot to change our deductable.  It is $500.

Repairs will cost $460.

Of course they will.

* waves white flag *

Today is Saturday.  Olivia has a rash all over her back.  This makes me happy, because she probably has Roseola and not the plague or herpes or whatever.

(She does not have herpes.)

Send beer.

Hope you catch a break soon and Miss O is on the mend!

I agree that you need something stronger... maybe a brewery followed by a winery!

I hope Olivia gets better soon!

Damn, Gina! I hope they hot (and homely) doctors figure out what's up with your sweet little Olivia.

If I could FedEx you a martini I could. Just for the record, my martini's rock. All of my co-workers can testify to this b/c I got them all drunk at the Xmas party, but I digress.
I am so fucking sorry your getting punched so much by life. Many hugs.
I will say it's not fair that Amirah had high fevers too and never got something cool like mouth foaming seizures. I feel so ripped off about that!
"How come Jen's baby get's to do all the cool stuff" insert foot stomp here.

Oh god, that sounds terrifying. So glad she's ok. And, of course, that she doesn't have herpes. Cause that would suck.

Poor Olivia, and poor you, and poor Mark. That is quite the run of bad luck. I hope it's done.

Yeah, it's always fantastic to hear that it's just a virus. Glad it's not the herpes.

Yikes. I'll get drunk for you.

just caught on to your blog and you are seriuosly hilarious! ok well this story in particular is not hilarious, its hella scary! sorry to hear you little one is sick, hoping that she is back to herself soon and that you got that beer or 10!

Rachel said...

Did they say the seizures were caused by the high fever? And that the high fever was caused by the UTI? It doesn't sound like "just a virus". (Also my LEAST favorite thing to hear. EVER.) I should mention I am NOT an MD, just a super paranoid mama. Anyway, holy shit on that run of bad luck. Hope it's over and Olivia gets well ASAP. Also, how on earth can you even have the strength to write about any of this? I would be on my knees sobbing and being all "why God, WHY?!?!?"

the mind behind said...

I had a Margaretta for you tonight. Okay, really it was for me. But you should have one too. Or two for you.
Happy thoughts for your sweet, twitching, frothing babe. It's so not okay what you're going through.

I can't even imagine what it must be like to see your sweet girl going through all that. Isn't it worse when they're sick yet perfect angels the whole time? Rip my heart out. What's amazing about this post is that with how badly I feel for you, you still made me laugh out loud. You have a new follower! Oh, and you need a gold star...I would have totally lost it and would have had to be committed for going through what you went through.

Kuparstwn said...

Oh my God. For real.

Poor you. Poor Olivia. I'm so sorry you went through all that but am glad it seems she might be feeling better. I believe the rash is a good sign.

She is.not.sick. because she's skinny! Don't even think that. Ignorant ER Waiting Room Lady can kiss your ass and mine too. Skinny baybee mommas gotta stick together.

Oh my god, I am so sorry for all that you're going through. Having a sick kid is SO hard and I have never dealt with a seizure. You're amazingly strong and your baby is perfect. And I'm with the other commenters...fuck that skinny kid lady. I have a skinny kid too. A really skinny one. And he's perfect so she can suck it. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Kitty said...

Screw the beer, I'm sending you Xanax. Lots of it.

Now that I think of it, take it with a beer.

I hope the baby gets better soon.

And I thought I was having a bad day. Poor little Olivia. A temp of 104 and seizures seems worse than "Just a Virus." Of course I have no medical background, but still! Hang in there. You're doing an amazing job - I'd have lost it 100 times over by now. Sending you some virtual wine (because that's what we have available!).

I'm so sorry for all of you. I hope Olivia is better soon and that things turn around in general. My nephew had several seizures when he was 2 (turns out he did have meningitis) and my sister spent the next 4 years taking his temperature like a mad woman and dosing him with tylenol whenever he had any touch of fever to make sure it never got into seizure range again. I actually had one or two when I was a baby -- I think febrile seizures might run in families, maybe??? Anyway, my sis did become a bit paranoid, but my nephew never did have anymore. Wishing good health to you all!

Meg said...

Glad to hear she has the rash now; all signs definitely point to Roseola. I think the rash means it's nearing the end. My little guy had it too; it was so pitiful to see him not himself. After the rash presented itself, he was definitely on the mend. Good luck!

Wow...what a few days that was! I'm glad she's doing OK and the DH is fine. Although I would think the truck who lost the wheel would have to pay for the repairs...not you guys.

Kahla said...

Oh sweet baby Jesus, I do not think that beer is strong enough. Glad DH is OK, glad Olivia is going to be OK, and think the truck should be paying for the repairs. No chance he got their license plate number... probably not since he was most likely just trying to not get killed by the spare flying at him. Ugh. May next week be a much better week!

SusanK said...

Ugh. Hang in there - and I really hope Olivia is back to herself asap. Take care.

Yikes. That's a day for the record books, right? At least you've got no where to go but up. Stay strong and have a margarita!

Oh you POOR MAMA and POOR BABY!! I'm so sorry that you had to go through this with Olivia.

ahhhhh Roseola....man alive that makes total sense but what an ordeal. Simone had that once but her fevers weren't high enough to cause seiures. That had to be so frightening :( *HUGS*

Thankfully, the rash means that she's on the up and up and should be back to her wonderful happy silly self in no time flat. Here's hoping!

Also - you, me, various other partners in crime - BEER. SOON.

Dana said...

PS: From one skinny kid mama to another - she is NOT sick because she's skinny. That's a load of horsecrap. Stupid waiting room biatch.

Roseola -- I'm glad the rash appeared and if that's what it is, she should be on the mend. Poor baby (both of you).

I hope little Olivia is feeling better. You are one strong mama. I would have lost my shit far sooner than the parking lot. Hope you are enjoying a relaxing Sunday.

Lisa said...

My Olivia just recovered from roseola in November (heck of a first birthday present). Fever got up to 106! Pedi (and doctor grandpa) both said relax - it's just a virus (UGH). Day after I finally got them to do a full workup (bloodwork, urine and flu test) she breaks out in the roseola bumps.

4 days of fever was horrible - but a seizure may just have killed me.

Hope she's feeling better now.

I think I said this before, but poor everyone. We're in sick-land here, too, but it ain't nothin' like that...I can't even imagine. Hoping she gets well soon.

Booo on seizures. Yay for cute doctors. Sounds like you're pretty well stocked on booze, so I'll send brownies instead.

Give kisses and hugs to my favorite internet baby pleeze.

Ugh. I am so sorry. I don't know what I would do. I would die. But after I stood there acting stupid while my baby had a seizure, frozen in fear. I hope she's ok, and I hope you're ok, and hope Mark is taking care of both of you because you both need a dang break.

Anonymous said...

I'm so sorry that the poor baby had another seizure. And how scary for you. Glad that you all came out OK on the other end.

I almost never comment, because my wit does not match yours. However, I just wanted to let you know I'm sending prayers and happy thoughts and cupcake dreams your way. Best of luck!

Jen said...

Sending prayers and maybe a little beer. I'm so sorry you're going through this. I felt nauseated just reading it, because if I were in your shoes I probably would have barfed over everything. Praying that you NEVER have to deal with this again.

Chris and Annalisa said...

*hands Jen a beer*

Oh my, you poor things! I would be freaking out. Sending prayers your way, and hoping for no more seizures.

L. said...

OMG, the seizures alone ("alone," ha, makes it sound like nothing) would send me into orbit, and not in a good way. I hope your next week is way better and more than that I am sending Olivia lots of get-well-very-soon wishes.

A keg is on the way....hopefully Mark doesn't run over it.

So very happy it isn't anything more serious.

Happy fucking 2010. HUGS

Hi, I'm new to your blog (found you from allthingsG&D and ababymaybe)
Just wanted to tell you that I'm sorry for you or any other parent to go through this. Our son had a febrile seizure last April and the doctors said it was fine and dandy. This just means that people have to be more aggressive when dealing with a temp. Cold/cool bath, wet towels (no sleeping) but I digress. Just keep good thoughts. I know it's hard and very scary. I think my son slept in our room for 2 weeks afterwards. I am sorry to say that most doctors say its heredity. Have you asked your parents or in-laws about similar symptoms? Most children do grow out of it. I did. Be brave, Mommy.

Jen- For starters your humor and stories are AWESOME! Not this one... for this one you need more than beer... like 10 jager bombs and a night out on the town. I started reading the birthing story post on G&D and followed over here for the last two... Side Note * I will never view play dough the same - that't ok... it isn't all it's hyped up to be * Your humor and through lifes struggles are uplifting and I hope that for Olivia's sake that after recovering from a couple hard days that she will be perfect. Aside from that I look forward to being a permenant visitor as I have enjoyed reading your blog today. Hope today is a better day! -Julie

Roseola, or 'baby measles', scared the crap out of me too. There is nothing scarier than seeing your baby miserable and listless (in my opinion). It really is just a high fever followed by a rash. Probably one of the least harmful illnesses, and everyone gets it at some point. It sucks about the febrile seizures, luckily they don't harm anyone except scare the parents. The good news is that it's over and she won't get it again! The bad news is that Olivia may be prone to febrile seizures... boo!

Parsing Nonsense said...

Oh my heavens, what an ordeal. I hope she does have something mild and not something scary like meningitis.

Maggie C. said...

I just got linked here to this post, so I'm not sure if there is a history of seizures. But, I'm not sure if this will ease your worries or not, but my parents' next door neighbors have a little girl who is now almost 6. They adopted her, and got her when she was about 6 months old. She started having seizures every couple months, always when she got a fever. It was of course a hard time for them, not knowing what was wrong or when they would happen. However, the doctors told them it was probably a reaction to a high fever, and a condition that she would grow out of. So, in the meantime, they watched her very carefully, and if any sign of sickness or fever happened, they would try to get the fever down fast before she would have a seizure. Like I said, she is almost 6 now, and seems to have outgrown the condition. Of course they are still very careful, but things are looking up. For your sake, and Olivia's sake, I hope this is a similar situation & that she will grow out of it! In the meantime, I'm so sorry for your whole ordeal & hope she is feeling better soon!

Been reading your blog for several months. Love your posts. I have a little boy who was born on Feb. 17 so I often relate to what you write about. You crack me up! Just catching up on your last 2 posts tonight. They seriously made me tear up because I can't even imagine how you must have felt, then saw the pic of Reno 911 and nearly peed my pants laughing. Hope everything takes a turn for the better!

Clair said...

Aw poor baby! And poor mamma too!

Something similar happened to me about a year ago with my then two year old. She had a wicked fever and cough. She started a fit of coughing and next thing you know she can't breath. We call 911, they come, tell us she needs a breathing treatment. They offer to drive us but said it would be safe for me to drive her in. I worked in the freaking ER for pete's sake so off I go. Tell them what happened and they tell me to sit down which is where we stay for an hour and a half surrounded by people apparently dying with the flu. My daughter projectile vomits and finally a nurse friend of mine sees us. My friend gave her some humidified oxygen and we left without ever seeing a doc.

Hope you are both recouping!

Aunt Becky said...

Sending vodka. Been there. Fucking sucks. Hate it. Sorry love. Sending more vodka.

K said...

Oh my.

My daughter has had three seizures... I know how terrifying they can be. Of course my daughter tends to stop breathing during her seizures, and when I'm faced with a non-responsive child who is not breathing and has blue lips, I tend to panic a bit. :-)

Anyhow, my point, and I am coming to it, is that all the many doctors we've talked to have all assured us that while febrile seizures can be scary as all get-out, they are not harmful and really tend to be harder on the parents/caregivers than on the child. Also by the time a child reaches about the age of five their brains have developed enough to no longer have febrile seizures. (Although I'm sure five years old seems like a long way off to you now.)

Here's hoping you've experienced your last seizure.

Malloryn said...

*big hugs* Sorry to hear about all of this! I hope things start to turn around for your whole family.

Elizabeth said...

So weird--I almost know how you feel because the same thing happened to a lesser degree to my kid just a couple weeks ago! Sleeping too much, very droopy baby, too high fever, pediatrician's office, maybe a spinal tap. get all ready and the apparently the tylenol kicked in and he starts laughing at the dr. We heard the same thing: Menigitis babies don't smile. And our annoying vague diagnosis was "it's some kind of infection", here's some stupid-strong antibiotics that will give your child lots of diarrhea and diaper rash but seem to work because now he's fine. Thank you for scaring the crap out of mommy, son.

Our fever wasn't so high and no seizures or ER, so great big hugs to you and enjoy that beer. We had wine that night (my husband and I, not my baby). I hope it never happens again to either of us.
